The rap world loses another young talent far too soon. According to TMZ, Mac Miller was found dead after an apparent drug overdose in his San Fernando Valley home at noon today (Sept. 7). He was only 26.
Mac’s family has issued a statement in light of his death. “Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26,” they told Rolling Stone. “He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”
A few months before his death, Miller had been in a drunk driving accident that saw his vehicle totaled. Mac fled the scene but later turned himself in, and his blood alcohol level was found to be more than twice the legal limit. The accident, which ultimately saw Miller arrested for DUI, spotlighted what some saw as a troubling personal trajectory for Miller, whose ex-girlfriend, Ariana Grande, had split from him just a month prior. The musical couple had been dating for two years.
Substance abuse was a topic Miller seemingly touched upon on his most recent album, Swimming, which saw the rapper detailing the way he lived his live with alcoholism and patterns of drug abuse.
While Miller had been dealing with some issues, his career was in good standing. He was all set to embark upon his Swimming tour next month, and he’d just performed his Swimming track, “Hurt Feelings,” in Los Angeles this past Monday (Sept. 3).
The world has lost another great talent. RIP MAC
